SARChI Postdoctoral Fellowship in Extragalactic Astronomy
1 Jun 2017 - 10:00
Through the National Research Foundation Research Chair Initiative, University of Cape Town is offering a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Extragalactic Astronomy. The successful applicant will work with Professor Thomas Jarrett, Research Chair in Astrophysics and Space Science, focusing on local-universe galaxies. The successful applicant will be joining a growing experimental and theoretical research group that exploits multi-wavelength (radio to UV) observations to study star formation and galaxy evolution, large-scale structures and cosmic flows. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in extragalactic infrared space missions, notably Herschel, Spitzer and WISE, and working with the Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP).
The successful candidate may spend up to 50% of their time on their own extragalactic research, and are encouraged to become involved in the UCT-led SALT and SKA-MeerKAT surveys, our national partnerships (notably with the University of the Western Cape, the South African Astronomical Observatory, and the SKA-SA), as well as strong collaborations with the Australia-led ASKAP and Netherlands-led Apertif. Astronomy is flourishing in South Africa with SALT now in full operation, MeerKAT under science-operations by early 2018, and the SKA in the next decade. In addition, the UCT astronomy group has a partnership stake in the Iziko Planetarium Digital Theatre, which may be used for visualization research and education-outreach purposes.
The appointment is for three years, pending satisfactory work progress after a two year term. The annual value of the fellowship is R350,000, which is fully tax-free. Equipment and travel funding is also available. A PhD in astronomy or astrophysics is required; note however, applicants should have obtained their PhD degree within the last five years at the time of the position startup. Interested candidates should send a CV, bibliography, brief summary of research, outline of future plans, and two letters of recommendation by 10 May 2017 to Mrs Roz Daniels (Roslyn.Daniels[at]ast.uct.ac.za). Applications will be considered from that date until the position is filled.
The position is available beginning early June 1, 2017.
