Astronomy Field Trip to SALT

On Saturday 14th May, a group of Astronomy students set off to see the collection of telescopes at Sutherland, and to pay homage to the new SALT telescope.
The weather promised to be extremely cold, but promises are not always kept. It was "warm" and it rained.
This didn't seriously hamper enjoyment of the trip - the telescopes were visited, the visitor centre was plundered,
and we had a chance to ask the Professor all those awkward questions we were too embarrassed to ask in class.

Thanks to Prof. Tony Fairall for organising the trip, and to the staff at the South African Astronomical Observatory for showing us round
and letting us stay indoors in the warm and dry, and lastly to Henk our driver and cook, who kept us very well fed and got us there and back safely.

We got a good feel for the life of an Astronomer - long, dark, cold hours in solitary confinement with some of the most exciting
and fundamental questions to answer, such as which CD to put on next.
