The evening before the workshop, there will be an informal gathering at the Ferryman's pub at the Waterfront at 6pm for drinks (offered by the workshop organisers) and dinner (at your own cost) afterwards. The location of the pub is indicated on a map included in your conference bag.
Braai at the SAAO (Monday 1 September, evening)
We offer a typical South African Braai (barbeque) on monday evening of the workshop on the grounds of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Cape Town. The evening will include a talk on the history of the observatory by Brian Warner. Partners are most welcome to attend. The cost for this function is included in the registration fee.
We invite all the workshop participants and partners to join us for a picnic lunch in the beautiful surroundings of the Kirstenbosch botanical gardens, illustrating the floral richness and diversity of the Cape Peninsula. The cost for this outing is included in the registration fee. Note: this event was originally scheduled for Friday 5 September.
The final workshop lunch (included in the registration fee) on Friday will be held at the Boschendalwine estate in Franschhoek. After lunch we will visit the wine estate for wine tasting. Partners are of course welcome to attend, but will be asked to pay for the conference lunch. Note: this event was originally scheduled for Wednesday 3 September.
Weekend tour to the SAAO Sutherland (Saturday/Sunday 6-7 September)
We offer a post-workshop tour to the SAAO Sutherland to visit the SALT telescope about 450 km north-east of Cape Town in the calmness of the Karoo desert. We will leave at 9 am on saturday morning. The night will be spend at the Sutherland hotel in Sutherland. This tour will include a visit to the very interesting museum in Matjesfontein (the type of exhibition is kept as a surprise). This tour will cost about R700 per person including the hotel cost, bus transport, lunches and dinner (this is a very rough estimate, a final cost estimate will be available on the monday of the workshop). Partners are of course welcome to attend.
